Difference between force-transmitting rod and tie rod of concrete pavement

Release time:Sep 14,2024

As the key components of expansion joints and contraction joints of concrete pavement, tie rods and dower rods are widely used in civil engineering. So, what are the specific differences between the two?

Distinction between definition and use

1. Dowel bar: it is a round steel bar arranged along the transverse joint of cement concrete road slab, which is placed in the center of plate thickness at regular intervals and is mainly used to transmit force.

2. Tie rod: It is a special-shaped steel bar that prevents the cement concrete road panel from moving sideways under the action of vehicle load. It is also arranged in the center of the plate thickness to enhance the stability of the road surface.

Material differences

The tie rod mainly uses threaded ribs, while the dowel rod mainly uses round ribs, and the different materials also determine their different functions in the pavement structure.

Different application scenarios

When the road width exceeds 4.5m, longitudinal contraction joints shall be set in the form of false joints, and tie rods shall be set in the center of the plate thickness. When the slab width is less than the pavement width, longitudinal construction joints shall be set.

Considering the convenience of construction and use, the setting of expansion joints should be minimized or avoided. Where expansion joints are required, such as adjacent to bridges or other fixed structures, sliding dowel bars shall be used and shall be parallel to the slab surface and the centerline of the road.

The spacing of transverse shrinkage joints is mainly determined according to climatic conditions, plate thickness and subgrade conditions. Under normal circumstances, the contraction seam adopts the form of false seam, and generally does not set the dowel bar. However, transverse construction joints must be set at the end of daily construction or when the pouring process is interrupted for some reason.

In the left and right half of the cast pavement, longitudinal tie rods will be set in the middle, and their settings are related to the thickness, width and length of the panel. The specific setting parameters shall be determined according to the engineering requirements and specifications.
